Sara Declercq transforms everything she touches into visual poetry. The Paris-born founder of Studio Declercq honed her craft as a senior print designer at fashion powerhouses Givenchy, Vivienne Westwood, and Alexander McQueen before establishing her independent atelier. Her work defies categorization – romantic florals bloom alongside rebellious graffiti and Matisse-inspired paper collage patterns with equal conviction.
Beyond dominating Fashion Week runways, her designs have graced Elle Fanning and Priyanka Chopra on film festival red carpets, cementing her influence beyond industry insiders. Her artistic DNA was formed in childhood, crafting miniature garments for Barbie dolls from handkerchiefs and ribbon scraps. "Each piece of fabric seemed to come alive in her hands," recalls a family member. As a teenager, she'd observe her grandmother's methodical sewing techniques, absorbing craftsmanship lessons that would later define her approach.
Unlike designers who map everything with surgical precision, Sara's process flows more organically. She collects visual references and arranges them freely, seeking unexpected connections and emotional resonance. This early immersion in traditional methods continues to influence her work today, creating a through line between heritage techniques and contemporary vision.
This Fabrique collaboration beautifully illustrates this approach. Rather than simply appropriating Chinese motifs, she immersed herself in Wong Kar-wai's "In the Mood for Love," studied the evolution of traditional garments, and explored color symbolism across cultures. "I hope my designs inspire everyone to explore their unique side and experience freedom in their choices," she explains. "I see clothing as a medium providing comfort, femininity, and confidence, helping people express different facets of themselves." The result merges precise cutting with natural floral elements that serve as a canvas for authentic self-expression.
