About
Elevated women's wear at Chloé, Kenzo and The Row. Created runway standouts with Venus-like draping while maintaining wearability. Known for transforming vintage pieces in her acclaimed 'Sister Sister' collection.
Anna Irigaray, a Paris-born designer, has built her career as a women's wear designer at prestigious fashion houses Chloé, Kenzo, and most recently The Row. During her time at The Row, a brand centered on minimalist aesthetic principles, she created runway standouts featuring draped pleats and structural elements reminiscent of Venus statues. Her work complemented The Row's timeless aesthetic while adhering to the brand's emphasis on wearability. Through refined tailoring techniques, these artistic pieces remain easily integrated into daily wardrobes despite their sculptural qualities.
Irigaray's design methodology differs from traditional approaches. Rather than limiting conceptualization to sketches, she works directly with fabrics on mannequins, pinning and continuously adjusting materials until achieving her envisioned form. This hands-on technique has resulted in numerous silhouettes that break conventional boundaries. Her creative process also draws heavily from vintage clothing.
Her personal project "Sister Sister" was inspired by independent photographer Liv Liberg's debut photo collection, which documented Liberg's sister over 15 years as she grew from girl to woman, often wearing her mother's ill-fitting clothes while gradually understanding herself and the world. "Through this photography collection, I explored the idea of digging into parents' or grandparents' closets and transforming those garments," Irigaray explains. One specific example: combining a vintage satin jacket with a cotton skirt, enhanced with antique lace to create a Victorian-style poet's robe.
In her latest work, Irigaray focuses on creating effortlessly elegant everyday pieces. "The inspiration comes from natural materials and classic silhouettes that work for all occasions, reflecting an elegant yet determined lifestyle," she states. With cotton as the foundation, she has developed a practical yet stylish spring/summer collection offering versatile wardrobe staples for diverse lifestyles. The meticulous craftsmanship and durable materials ensure these aren't merely seasonal items but enduring wardrobe essentials that maintain elegance through years of wear.
